The performer PRICE explores the emotional conditions of contemporary life, engaging questions of identity and affect in a disorientating age defined by globalization, neoliberalism and the increasingly central role of the internet in shaping communication, emotions and subjects. Each performance embodies his practice in a contextually specific manner depending on whether his work is being presenting in a gallery or museum, performance space or a club setting.

The central protagonist of his work is PRICE, a person Ringgenberg adopts for his performances. Whilst inhabiting the language of contemporary mass culture from pop music, reality TV and social media platforms Ringgenberg seeks to probe the social impact and emotional fallout of the pervasive mediation of selfhood that typifies the present generation. The concerns animating Ringgenberg’s practice emanate from and speak to Generation Y, a demographic that are internet-savvy and have a pluralistic cultural outlook but which he considers to be ‘homeless’, lacking in a strong sense of historical consciousness and subjective agency.

PRICE is an ambiguous character at once aloof and affectless yet provoking his audiences towards a more honest relationship to one another and their desires. He sometimes appears to play the role of a jaded pop star returning from the future to warn that contemporary modes of self-performance and social relation will result in isolation, exhaustion and alienation if not transformed. PRICE finds his place in a tradition of queer performance but avoids the confines of a clichéd camp, seeking to question the institu- tional boundaries between performance art, theatre and popular music rather than assumptions around gender and sexual identity alone.
